Sight Words
Some children first learn to read by visually recognizing familiar words such as ‘dog’, ‘under’, or ‘run’. Since they already know the word sounds and what they mean, their brain sees the word and join it with the sound and meaning without much formal teaching. The easiest sight word children can learn is their name. Show them their name…. and maybe even have them copy it (or even type it)!
Some of the common sight words that help prepare children for learning to read are listed below. For more free information about sight word teaching and resources go to https://sightwords.com/
An effective way parents can help children learn sight words is to read them stories that have some of these words and point them out as you read. Pointing them out places them in the story sentence helps them associate the visual representation of the word with the meaning.
